st. matthew’s hardware

We’re lucky to still have plenty of old neighborhood hardware stores in Louisville.  Despite the Home Depots, Lowe’s, Wal-Marts, etc. that always threaten these mom and pop stores, many have managed to survive.  St. Matthew’s Hardware is one of them.  The shop’s been open since the early 1920s.  The original owners, a married couple, lived in the apartment above the store.  Apparently, every week the man went out and purchased a bottle of bourbon and a racing forum for his wife.  They tended the store, enjoyed their bourbon, and bet on the horses.  Though they aren’t around anymore, the business has pretty much stayed in the family and is much the same as it was back then.  It’s a cool old place to wander around in, with plenty of quirky knick knacks and pretty puch everything you need for your home maintenance needs. and they repair anything (within reason).

My Uncle George and Aunt Altha Wurster owned and operated this store during the 1920s-1930s-1040s and sometime later. My Uncle George died in the early 1940s. I lived with my aunt in the aprtment over the store until I joined the service in 1945. I worked in the store during 1944 and a part of 1945. My fellow employees were Art Priest, A Mr Sacra and bookkeeper George Hammer. I believe that George Hammer purchased the store later on. The store had a small truck and we made deliveries all over St Mathews and over to the ritzy areas around Indian Hills, etc. Those were the fun days for me. Don
