food in the south is good

lofood1The Hominy Grill, Charleston.  Fried cheese grits, squash casserole, lima beans.

Hominy Grill, Charleston. Famous for these Shrimp ‘n Grits. Also shrimp and okra begniets. Homemade lemonade. Buttermilk pie. Thanks for the recommendation, Anthony Bourdain.

Leopold’s Ice Cream, Savannah, GA. Best ice cream ever? Georgia Peach for me, pistachio sundae for my boyfriend- he has a major sweet tooth.

Jestine’s Kitchen, Charleston.  Fried okra, mac and cheese, greens, coconut cream pie (pictured in my very first post on lowcountry.) Boyfriend reported that his fried chicken was the best he’d ever had. Another recommendation c/o No Reservations.

Clary’s Cafe, Savannah. Strawberry stuffed french toast, shrimp eggs benedict. Important place from the book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”

Taco Boy, Folly Beach, SC. The best beach restaurant I’ve ever been to. The vegetarian tacos were also the best I’ve ever had, plus delicious margaritas and other tequila mixed drinks made with their homemade sour mix- fresh squeezed limes, etc. I went here two times it was so good.

Elizabeth on 37th, Savannah. This was our one “fine dining” meal.  All of their produce was grown in their on site garden, the cheeses were local, the meat and seafood was local, etc.  Very accommodating for vegetarians and the old Gullah recipes were fantastic. This was a cheese plate, divided up into 2 different plates for each of us.. outstanding cheeses, Georgia pecans, mini pancakes, 2 varieties of honey from the Savannah Honey Company. Oh and to start: homemade cheese drop biscuts with orange marmalade and watermelon salad. This was the best meal of the trip.
