west virginia wilderness

It’s been a really busy few days for me, so I haven’t done any exploring around Louisville- just working.  Here are a few photos of the beautiful mountains in West Virginia, where the pace is a lot slower.  Taken in January, while en route to DC:

Love the woods in winter. Used to go hiking with friends up at the Henryville Forest in Indiana when it snowed. Sometimes we’d slide on cardboard down the steep old road to the fire tower. It was always so still up there, almost as if the world was napping. The only sounds were the ones you made, crunching feet and breathing. Streams would be crusted over with ice but still trickling under the surface. Sometimes there would be bird tracks or if you were really lucky a deer or some other woodland critter. Made you feel like Daniel Boone, an explorer or pioneer, and I always wondered how they felt on days like this. We’d take a bagged lunch and something hot to drink, maybe some brandy, too. Good times.
